Anti-abduction clinics at Shin's exposes children to the most common lures & tricks used by child predators. Participants learn how to respond quickly & effectively against a variety of threats from an adult attacker, standing up and on the ground. The goal is not to frighten the participants but to empower them.
Shin's Family Martial Arts Center will be offering an anti-abduction clinic on Friday, December 9th. The clinic will be from 6pm to 7pm and is open to all Shin's students, siblings and friends ages 7-13 years old. The instructors and I encourage you to forward the attached flyer to everyone you know in town and explain why basic self defense knowledge is so crucial especially after recent events on the news. Our philosophy at Shin's has always been ..."it is better to know it and not need it then to need it and not know it!"
According to the FBI, almost 800,000 individuals are reported missing in the United Stateseach year. Of these, 85-90 percent are juveniles, equaling nearly 2000 missing children daily. Between 1998 and 2010, there was a 40% increase in crime reported by the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. In 1998, Santa Clarita Valley was listed as one of the top ten safest cities in the country. In 2010, Santa Clarita DID NOT even rank on the top 25 list. Currently, there are 192 registered sex offenders in the Santa Clarita Valley. This information is available to any parent on the Megan’s Law website. The numbers are listed by zip code, so you can find out how many registered sex offenders are living in your neighborhood. This research gives parents necessary information so that they can make informed decisions about protecting their children. This is a call to action for parents in any growing city. As parents, you can no longer afford to be complacent. Your children need the tools to empower themselves.
Safeguard™, offered exclusively at Shin’s, was developed specifically to address the issue of child abduction and will be the main focus of both clinics. Throughout the anti-abduction clinic, the child is introduced to the most common lures and tricks used by child predators and taught how to respond appropriately. Both clinics will incorporate real life scenarios where children learn to react instinctively to an adult attacker. The instructors will wear fight suits so that the child can fight back effectively if they ever face a child predator. At some point, the lights will be extinguished to simulate attacks in the dark. Besides various physical responses, the instructors and I will stress the importance of awareness, intuition and instincts as the greatest weapons for personal safety.
