Martial Arts

The first question to ask yourself is what style of martial arts do you or your child want to learn?  The second question is, "Do you want you or your child to learn how to protect themselves?  There are two basic types of martial arts; striking and grappling and two different approaches to teaching martial arts.

World Tae Kwon Do Federation is the only style of Tae Kwon Do that is recognized by the International Olympic Committe. WTF Tae Kwon Do teaches continuous round sparring like boxing and the newer sport Ultimate Fighting Championship.  American Tae Kwon Do Association originated in the United States and is an americanized version of Tae Kwon Do.  Like most striking martial arts, ATA Tae Kwon Do and Karate teach point sparring. In point sparring the match is stopped when a point is scored.  How is this realistic training?  Would you tell your attacker to wait a minute so that you could prepare yourself to fight again?  Judo and Jujitsu are grappling martial arts that focus primarily on ground fighting.  Shin's recognizes that there are some limitations with striking martial arts so we have incorporated Safeguard (our anti-abduction program) into the curriculum so that our student's can learn how to defend on the ground.

Traditional schools can tend to be authoritative and militaristic.  They can tend to focus on negative cues like, "Thats not a good enough kick or kick harder or get down and give me 50 push ups."  Non traditional schools like Shin's focuses on being positively motivating in their approach to teaching martial arts.  The best way to keep kids and adults motivated is to constantly update the curriculum and have positive instructors who always praise and encourage. Children with good self esteem generally make good life choices.
