Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) utilizes a variety of fighting techniques and skills from a mixture of martial arts, founded in different parts of the world, such as boxing/kickboxing, wrestling and jiu jitsu.  These martial arts traditions and non-traditions incorporate the use of striking as well as grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground.  Constantly evolving, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has grown into a full contact combat sport and self defense system.

At Shin’s, our Mixed Martial Arts program focuses on three general areas of MMA training:  ground fighting, wrestling and striking.  Ground fighting is the closest to "pure" grappling one finds in today’s MMA and is heavily influenced by Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) techniques.  We teach our students ground fighting skills so that they have the ability to force a fight to the ground if necessary, where they can then seek fight-ending submission holds including joint locks and chokeholds.  Since the ability to perform takedowns is essential to ground fighting strategy, our mixed martial arts program at Shin’s also emphasizes wrestling techniques to teach our students how to execute clean, powerful takedowns.  This common “ground and pound” strategy is incorporated in our mixed martial arts training because it gives our students a method of taking an opponent down, achieving a dominant ground position, and finishing the fight with strikes.  Striking, also known as standup fighting, is an integral part of mixed martial arts training at Shin’s.  Our students are well versed in striking just in case they have to stay on their feet in a confrontation.  We call this strategy "sprawl and brawl".  This refers to the focus on nullifying takedowns with the sprawl, which is the highest percentage defense to one of the more common entries to a takedown in wrestling (the shoot), in order to stay upright and deliver strikes.  We teach our students all three areas of MMA training by focusing on “putting it together”.  This means using boxing to set up a takedown, taking someone down while maintaining position for a submission, boxing on the ground, etc.

Students in our mixed martial arts program benefit in several ways.  In other words, ground fighters learn at least the basics of wrestling to be able to take people down to the ground and the basics of striking to keep from getting KOed. Strikers learn enough wrestling to neutralize takedown and throw attempts and enough ground fighting to get back to their feet if they are taken down. Wrestlers learn enough ground fighting or striking to protect themselves in one of those areas and to be able to easily finish opponents with another.
