Our Performance Training Methods

Valencia Martial Arts Center – (661) 338-2922

Shin’s Family Martial Arts Center uses proven, state-of-the-art training methods for all of our taekwondo, self-defense, martial arts, and fitness programs. Performance training is a combination of:

  • Plyometrics
  • Core conditioning
  • Biomechanics

Plyometrics incorporates exercises or drills aimed at linking strength with speed of movement. The power that is produced enables the muscle to reach maximum strength in the shortest time possible. Core training involves the integration and coordination of movement and stability in the entire body. Bio mechanics is the science that examines the internal and external forces acting on biological systems and the effects produced by these forces.

Importance of Proper Training

Shin’s Family Martial Arts Center recognizes the importance of performance training in building a solid foundation for our students in order for them to be successful in their martial arts, self-defense, and martial arts acrobatics (trampoline and tumbling) training. As a result, performance training is integrated into all of our unique programs offered at our Valencia martial arts center. These dynamic techniques give our students state-of-the-art functional training. This system not only improves martial arts, self-defense, and tricking skills, but overall athleticism. Students who participate in other sports benefit from this type of training.

Core conditioning, functional training, and plyometrics are the key elements of our performance training program. At Shin’s Family Martial Arts Center, not only do we focus on making our students better martial artists, we help create better athletes.

“Dear Master Shin, When Cole wanted to be a ninja at age 3, my husband only wanted to take him to Shin’s because of the positive experience he had there some 20 years ago. When Cole just sat there in class the first day, you told us that he’s just observing and will come around. You were absolutely right! Cole entered Shin’s this shy little kid who introduced himself as Batman. Now 4+ years later he is a slightly bigger kid with confidence, martial arts skills and respect for all those around him. You and your staff have been an incredible part of both of my kids’ lives, and I hope it continues for a very long time. May you continue to impress a positive experience in both kids and adults for many more years to come. Thank you! Willy, Charissa, Cole and Julia Harber”

  • Why You Should Take Tae Kwon Do

“INTRO Think: Many people are victims of bullies who beat them up. Do you want to be one of them? To prevent you from getting bullied, there is a thing called Tae Kwon Do. Discover this martial art, as we journey through kicks and punches to learn three good reasons for studying Tae Kwon Do: Self-Defense, Stature, and Discipline. REASON 1: Self-Defense To begin with, you should learn Tae Kwon Do because if somebody attacks you, you can defend yourself. Many kids are bullied each year, and some are even kidnapped, but you can prevent yourself from being one of them by learning this martial art. For example, most people who can hurt you, can easily be stopped by a kick between the legs. Besides, if your muscles are strong enough and you’re in top shape, you could defend yourself and even if the person manages to punch you, you might not get hurt so bad. Tae Kwon Do can defend and protect you REASON 2: Stature Secondly, you should learn Tae Kwon Do because when you get fit, you’ll look quite impressive delivering punches and kicks. Have you seen those marital art movies? When you become a black-belt, you could perform moves like those. Who knows? Once you get really good at Tae Kwon Do, you could get signed up to be in a movie, and, maybe you might be a star! In any case, Tae Kwon Do can make you look impressive Why You Should Take Tae Kwon Do REASON 3: Discipline Finally, you must take Tae Kwon Do to learn discipline. Yes, I said discipline. Tae Kwon Do isn’t just about the moves. It doesn’t matter how strong your kicks are, or how fast your punches are, if you are undisciplined, you won’t get your next belt. To have discipline, do your best, be respectful, say “Yes sir” to anything your Master says in class, bow to the flags when you come in/out of the Dojang, and remain quiet at all times, except when you are kicking. When you kick, yell “kiap!” Just doing those simple things will make you better liked by the instructors and admired by others. Discipline means that you train the body and mind to react automatically, and not to use force unless necessary. Tae Kwon Do is discipline COUNTER-ARGUMENT Many people say that if someone fights you, you should tell an adult. But what if the bullying doesn’t stop after you tell? What if someone starts punching and beating you? Are you just going to let he/she finish you off, and then later tell on them? Or, are you going to show your opponent what you think of the bullying? Tae Kwon Do is about self-defense CLOSING So, as you have learned, Tae Kwon Do isn’t just kicks. It’s discipline, respect, stature and self-defense. I believe that Tae Kwon Do promotes health, learning, protection and fun. Remember, Tae Kwon Do is: Defense and Offense, Stature, Discipline and Respect. So, why don’t you sign up for some Tae Kwon Do lessons today? KIAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

“There are no benches in martial arts. There is no right field in martial arts. Although not by design, the bench and the position of right field undermine the very thing that a sport should do for a child: raise self esteem. As a teacher I see first hand the role good self esteem plays in a student’s academic success. Self esteem can do more to determine how much a student can achieve then will raw intelligence, a good teacher or the latest in classroom technology. A quality martial arts training will raise a student’s self esteem. It is goal oriented (the coveted black belt), with small successes built in along the way (the other colored belts). No one sits on the bench. Students are involved the entire time. They learn team work as they hold bags for others to practice. They learn how to work with others as they spar. They learn how to win and how to lose, all the while keeping their self respect in tact. Not just any martial arts program can provide the above. It takes a special, talented and trained instructor to accomplish this. Master Shin is that instructor. He is the rare sort of teacher that can respond to young children, teenagers and adults equally. I have had Master Shin’s students sit in my own classroom. These students showed respect for their teachers, fellow classmates and themselves. They are driven to succeed, focused and possess self control. As a junior high teacher, I know these are rare qualities indeed for this age group. Master Shin provides quality instruction, a safe environment and serves as a positive role model. As a green belt in his adult class, I have seen first hand the kind of teacher Master Shin is. He is not only a role model for children, he is a role model for the teachers of your children, such as me.”

  • Discipline, Courage, Determination… and Just Plain Hard Work.

“Discipline, courage, determination, and just plain hard work. These are words that come to mind when I think about my experiences at Shin’s Black Belt Academy. Since my first day of class to the present, each time I enter the studio I know I am in for one tough workout that will challenge me and teach me the aforementioned words. The classes are well organized, taught with passion by Master Shin, and constantly changing to best suit his students. The environment of the classes are a direct result of Master Shin’s personality and ability to make his students feel like they are accomplishing something special, which they are. Master Shin’s pleasant demeanor and obvious enjoyment for his job, along with his excellent teaching techniques and verbal praises have made me more aware of how I can better myself as a teacher and basketball coach. Having also seen Master Shin work with children and teenagers I am convinced that he is truly a gifted teacher and a very good person.”
